Renewable Energy Investments: How Foreign Capital is Transforming the Global Energy Sector

The global energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by foreign investment in renewable energy and clean technologies. These investments are opening up new frontiers and opportunities, especially in emerging and developing countries.

Growth of Foreign Investment in Renewable Energy

In 2024, the portfolio of foreign investment projects in Chile increased by 68% compared to the previous year, totaling US$$ 56.234 billion. The energy sector led these investments, accumulating US$$ 36.817 billion, an increase of 131%. This growth is largely due to green hydrogen projects, which totaled US$$ 25.617 billion.

In Africa, China has announced the implementation of 30 clean energy projects over the next three years, with an investment of €46 billion and the creation of one million jobs on the continent. This initiative aims to expand China's presence in the African green technology market and counterbalance Western trade restrictions.

Initiatives by Large Corporations in the Clean Technologies Sector

Global companies are setting up significant funds to promote clean technologies. For example, Amazon has created the Climate Pledge Fund, a corporate venture capital fund with an initial investment of US$1.4 billion in June 2020, aimed at investing in companies focused on decarbonization and sustainable services.

Furthermore, the Breakthrough Energy, founded by Bill Gates in 2015, aims to accelerate innovation in sustainable energy and other technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The fund invests in a variety of startups that are trying to commercialize new concepts, such as nuclear fusion, large-capacity batteries to store renewable energy, and biofuels generated by microbes.

The future is now! Foreign investment in renewable energy and clean technologies is already redefining the global energy sector. Countries and companies that embrace these innovations not only contribute to environmental sustainability, but also position themselves competitively in a rapidly evolving market.
